Are you impacted by Canada’s new non-resident registration requirements?

The Canada Revenue Agency has recently implemented new registration requirements for non-residents effective July 1, 2021. The rules, for the most part, are often referred to as Digital Registration Requirements. However, they are actually much more than that:

  • The rules apply not only to digital and e-commerce transactions but also to services.
  • The rules apply not only to businesses making supplies to consumers (B2C) but also has implications for B2B transactions.
  • In addition, there are implications under these new provisions for Canadian businesses who acquire services or other intangibles from non-residents. So the new rule will have an impact on both non-Canadian based and Canadian based businesses.

Understanding the impact this may have is critical to ensuring your organization’s ongoing compliance. To help more professionals, Grant Thornton supports CCPAA-ON holding a tax webinar to discuss the new rules. The session will review new registration requirements, who is impacted, how to comply and what are the obligations once registered. It will also highlight some of the challenges we have seen to date that organizations are facing under these new simplified GST/HST registration provisions. We will also provide a summary of the general GST/HST registration requirements so that you will leave the session having a complete understanding of the registration obligations for non-residents and how it impacts your business.
